Agoh: A Tradition Disappeared in Mithila

Today, we shall discuss a tradition that has disappeared in Mithila.

Currently, more people cultivate by tractor than those who cultivate by plowing. Earlier, it was the tradition of the oxen to plow. After loads of paddy were brought from the field, it was piled up in one place. A hole was dug in the middle of the courtyard. The bamboo was worshiped and buried into the pit. The bamboo pillar was called 'Meh'. After the Meh was well buried, the paddy was spread well around it. A kind of rope was tied to the Meh, which was called 'karam'. After that, many oxen were tied in karam and rolled on paddy. After the threshing was done, the paddy was cleaned with the help of a naanglo (Flat round tray used for winnowing grain). A naanglo of paddy was separated from the cleaned paddy. It was placed on the floor. A handful of paddy was taken from it and offered to God in five places. After the worship, the rest paddy on the floor was given to the daughter of the house. The paddy was called 'Agoh'. Now, this tradition has disappeared.
